  7.     The Defense Secretary appears to have a double standard when
  8. it comes to Pentagon policy on military families. Dick Cheney
  9. opposes a proposed law that would excuse one parent from the
  10. front lines in the event married soldiers with children are
  11. both called to serve. Cheney's position prompted the sponsor
  12. of the Military Orphans Prevention bill to remind him about his
  13. own history as a noncombatant. California Congresswoman Barbara
  14. Boxer points out that Cheney received a deferment from the
  15. Vietnam draft in 1966 because his wife Lynne was pregnant. "You
  16. . . . felt that your wife and soon-to-be-born child needed you,"
  17. Boxer wrote Cheney last week. "Our bill . . . is not even that
  18. generous."
